Whether you are planning to adopt a step child, family member, or through the Children’s Aid Society, if you want to adopt a child in Ontario, you must apply to family court for an adoption order.
If you want to adopt a child in Ontario, there are several steps involved. You must complete a home study, where you will be evaluated by a social worker to assess your capacity to be a parent. As well, you must open a court application in family court. This application involves filling out many forms. Usually you will have to obtain the consent of the biological parent(s), if they are alive and their location is known. There are circumstances where the consent of the biological parent will not be required.
